You can tell whitch wheel is bad because if you turn to that direction you will feel that one side is leaning down more than the other
actually you can use a car jack, and jack up a side, and put your hand on the top of the wheel and bottom of the wheel and try to rock it, if it rocks then the bearing in loose or bad, and you can spin the wheel and if it hard to spin or makes a gring noise then it is bad. some times the axle bolt can be loose check that too.
a humming sound usually heard on cornering, if heard when going left, its the right bearing and vice versa
If a bearing is bad, You will hear a whining noise from the bad bearing. Try to listen if it is up front or back. The noise will get louder as you go faster. Turn left and right to determine what side the bad bearing is on. If you turn left and the noise gets louder, the right bearing is bad, turn right and the noise gets louder, the left bearing is bad.
A growl or rumble that changes pitch when you turn left or right would be a wheel bearing going bad. A bad strut would allow that corner of the car to bounce too much.
front wheel bearing bad on a motorcycle
If you turn around a corner and you hear a grinding or clicking noise coming from the front wheels, you may have a CV axle problem. This grinding or clicking will be much worse when turning one direction than turning the other. If the noise is worse when turning left, the right CV axle is to blame, if the noise is worse when turning right, the problem is in the left CV axle. For a bad wheel bearing, you must raise the vehicle so the wheels are off the ground... Grab the tire firmly and try to wiggle it around. A bad wheel bearing will have a lot of play and will wiggle around, a good wheel bearing will be solid and will have very little or no play.
When you take your hands off the steering wheel with the car moving and it goes to the left or right quickly.
You'll hear a noise similar to...cats fighting? if a wheel bearing is going bad. Also, the car will tend to pull to the bad bearing side, if it's a front bearing. If you're hearing noises that aren't "cats fighting" yet, touching the suspected wheel (under any hubcap) with a wet rag (since it could be very hot), right after stopping, then checking temp of rag, can indicate a wheel bearing failure.
Jack up the front end, Hold the wheel at the top and bottom, if you can wiggle it, it is bad. Also on a right turn it should quit making any noise. A right turn will load the left bearing and the noise will go away if it is the hub.
Most of the time you can hear a bad wheel bearing but the only 100% sure way to know is to remove the bearing and inspect it.Most of the time you can hear a bad wheel bearing but the only 100% sure way to know is to remove the bearing and inspect it.
Temporarely let go of the steering wheel and see if it pulls either left or right.
If you suspect a flat spot on a tire examine the tire closely. You should be able to see a flat spot. To determine if your car has a bad wheel bearing rotate the wheel. A bad wheel bearing will often make a grinding sound as well as feeling rough as you turn the wheel. A bad wheel bearing may also shake or wiggle. It will also cause a car shaking problem.
As with any bearing going bad it would growl and the noise would increase with speed.
