There are a number of risk factors associated with having a stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) including obesity, atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries), high blood pressure, smoking, drug use... (for more info look up National stroke foundation in your area). Commonly a person will suffer a DVT (deep vein thrombosis - or clot in extremity) or a pulmonary embolism (lung clot) prior to a CVA... so if you have significant pain localised in your calf seek medical assistance ASAP. Also common signs of a CVA include confusion, weakness (usually on one side of the body) and difficulty with swallow or speech.

If you are having a stroke, it will most likely be quite obvious. Some symptoms are weakness, tingling, numbness, paralysis, slurring of the speech, and much more, but those are the most common.

you ask the docter Sudden weakness or numbness of one side of the face or of one arm or leg. Some stroke sufferers experience a sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in only one eye. They may also suddenly become unable to speak or have trouble understanding speech. Sudden, severe headaches with no known cause and sudden, unexplained dizziness, unsteadiness, or falls, can also be warning signs of a stroke.
