all quality jewls will have a number on them. go to a jewler to find out what the number represents. he/she will tell you weather it is plated or real. if it doesnt have a number (they are really small) it is probley made of plastic or something else cheap
9ct gold will have a '375' or '9ct' or '9kt' stamped onto it somewhere, gold plated gold won't have this.
Rub it, if you can smell tarnish its not solid gold because gold doesn't rust. Its probably what it's plated to!

You can't use a magnet to determine if something IS gold. However, if the specimen reacts to the magnet is is certainly NOT gold.
LGB means the item is plated. If there is also a 925 mark it means there is silver underneath the gold plate. A magnet will tell you if the metal underneath is a ferris metal or not.
