ONLY I repeat ONLY while the engine is cool, take the radiator cap off, let it warm up a little bit. The thermostat will open up and then you should see the water in the radiator circulate. If you see no movement, you might want to check your thermostat first. You can do this by placeing it in a pot of boling water on the stove. If the thermostat does not open then its bad. Which could be why your car is over heating, if in fact it is. But after all that your water pump should circulate the water and you sould be able to visually see movement in your radiator. Just to add to the very good advise above It is not unusual for the impeller to come loose in the pump causing a lack of water flow.
