A fever is a sign of a cold or sinus infection. Although both Allergies and a cold may have a clear discharge from the nose, it may turn creamy, yellow or green after a few days with a cold. Allergies produce dry coughs where colds produce wetter-sounding coughs. With allergies, eyes may be itchy and either watery or dry; with a cold, they may turn pink with a discharge matching the nose.

That is usually hard to tell but it has been said that when your mucus that comes out when you sneeze is greenish or yellowish it is some type of infection (like a cold)but when you have allergies it is clear.

I am not 100% SURE about this but someone once told me and everytime I have one or the other it always proves to be true>

23/May/09 Hay fever symptoms can sometimes mimic cold symptoms; this means that the discomfort is assumed to be no more than a cold, and treatment gets delayed. One of the first indications that your symptoms may be due to hay fever rather than a cold relates to the duration of symptoms. A cold virus usually lasts 7-10 day whereas hay fever will continue. Experiencing typical cold symptoms for more than two weeks suggests seeing a doctor. Itching The annoying itching that hay fever sufferers often have doesn't occur with a cold. DifferencesThere are differences between the nasal congestion of a cold versus and that of hay fever. In hay fever the mucus from the nose is usually watery+ quite clear whereas a cold will tend to produce thicker mucus that is yellowish. Oddly enough hay fever doesn't produce a fever, but a cold can. Also, with a cold a person normally experienced aching and tiredness - this doesn't happen with hay fever. If in doubt, consult a doctor.

While exhibiting similar symptoms such as headaches and congestion, a cold can have some subtle differences from allergies. Colds can cause general weakness, mild fever, and extra tiredness. Additionally, any illness (including colds) can cause a higher waking heart rate (the heart rate measured while still lying in bed after waking up in the morning). This last item (elevation of waking heart rate) can only be determined if you have previously averaged your waking heart rate while healthy.

As a side note, colds are caused by viruses, and should not be treated with antibiotics.
