You can only tell if the El Camino is a Royal Knight by the build sheet, the VIN number will not tell you. If you do not have the build sheet then there is no other way in telling. I have one and it is the only way I could tell if mine is a true Royal Knight.
There were just over 58,000 Royal Knight model El Caminos manufactured by Chevrolet. A Royal Knight El Camino for this year only came in black.
The Royal Knight El Camino replaced the Black Night El Camino in mid 1978 after General Motors was sued over using the words Black Knight. However, the Royal Knight was a 1979 model and was never produced as a 1978 model. The 79 Royal Knights were made with a super sport package and came with a 305, 4 barrel carburetor (mostly in an automatic unless special ordered with a stick shift). The Royal Knight was produced through 1983. From 1979 to 1980 it was a regular production car. The exact number is unknown. From 1981 to 1983 the Royal Knight was available through special order. It was no longer a regular production vehicle.
In 1978 there were 1,200 Black Knight El Camino's made. GM stopped production in June 1978 due to a law suit in reference to calling the El Camino a Black Knight. They renamed it the Royal Knight and began production again in late 1978 for the 1979 model. The car came with a 305 4 barrel at this point. 1978 was the last model year the El Camino's came with a 350 motor. Any El Camino made after 1978 only came with a 305 motor. The Royal Knight was produced in the regular El Camino line up until 1980 and then it became a special order until 1983 when it was discontinued. The Black Knight only came with camel colored interior and came in an automatic or a 4 speed (most popular). Car dealers were noted back in 1978 to clone other super sports as the Black Knight to increase sales. The other Super Sports made in 1978 came with a black upper half and a red lower half spelling out Super Sport along the bottom of the car. Unfortunately the only way to tell a Black Knight apart was the color of the interior and the Z19 stamp on the firewall tag. I am a previous owner of a Black Knight and I wish I would have never sold it.
