F-150 has never had a locking differential until the 2009 F-150 FX4 model. Only choices before the 2009MY was a limited slip or open differential.
Limited Slip Differential 3.55 gear ratio
on the top of the differential
I believe that is a 3.55 conventional axle ( non - limited slip )
A limited slip differential with 3.55 gearing , Ford , 3800 pound capacity
On the end of the drivers door on one of the information stickers you will see a 2 " character " axle code such as " 19 " ( which would be a 3.55 non - limited slip ) , " 18 " ( which would be a 3.08 non - limited slip ) " H9 " (3.55 limited slip ) " B6 " ( 3.73 limited slip ) The code is used to look up the type of differential and gear ratio
Open differential unless you ordered it from the factory.

On the 1997 Ford F150, the differential could be in both the front and rear. From 1997 and on Ford used two different axles. Your truck could either have the 8.8 or 9.75 differential. If you have a rear differential you would need to lower your spare tire to have access to it.
