Turtles can hold their breath for pretty long time. They can slow down their breathing and breath when the oxygen in their blood drops. This will let them hold their breath for a longer period of time.

∙ 12y agoWhen the head is out of the shell then you can see the throat expand if the head is in the shell then look behind where the legs start(not the butt) and you should be able to see the skin going in and out. If you are worried that your turtle is dead try doing an eye test by gently poking right above or if that doesn't work on the eye and see if he blinks or not. Some times turtles can just be temporarily paralyzed with fear and will not respond to the eye test so put him half in half out of the water or fully out and leave him alone or watch from a distance. Hopefully he will eventually come out, I had a wild caught baby turtle give me a scare like that before. He was and still is fine but his back legs were paralyzed for about a month afterwards but I don't know if that was from fear or if that was how he was born. He is fully fine now and now that he can move he doesn't stop! I hope your turtle is okay.
