Answer:

Some of the below folks had the right idea, but not completely correct. There are two correct and accurate ways to sex snakes. The first and best method would be probing while the second method is popping.

With probing, you use special probing tools and insert them into the cloaca. Depending on the species, a certain scale depth will tell you if it is male or female. Generally the depth is further for male and shorter for female. DO NOT do this unless you have been taught by an experienced reptile breeder or vet, as you can damage the snake if done improperly.

With popping you apply pressure on the outside of the cloaca. Again, if you do this the wrong way you can damage the snake. This is best done on hatchlings and young snakes, adults are much harder to successfully do this on.

Appearance is not a good method for sexing. Someone mentioned males having spurs - this is also not the best way because females of many species of pythons and boas also have spurs, and can even have larger spurs than some males. Some species of snakes can be spur sexed but for MOST species this is not a good way to do it. Also, some species of either sex do not have spurs.

The idea that you can tell the sex of a snake by the colour is absolutely ridiculous.

ked arctic has it right, but I will had that in most cases you dont even need to "pop" the snake. Males will have spurs that stick out slightly in order to "hold" the female in position while mating.

It's possible to detect sex of snake only by inspecting the sex organ..The male carries bifurcated penis (may be thorny) whìch could be seen by applying a gentle pressure around the anal region.But not in females. Color definitely is not a guide to detect.

The Difference Between Snake's Sex

I believe that you can tell the difference between snakes by their color & size (yet size depends on the species of the snake). I've tend to notice that the male snakes seem to be lighter in color & the females usually darker in color. For this reason I do not know. But that's just what I've notcied.

Females=Darker Color
Males=Lighter Color

Now, depending on the species of the snake, size will matter. But most of the time, the female is bigger because she is the one producing the offspring when the male is more active & engaged in hunting & chasing the female. So I hope that helped.

This is the best way I know of to see if you snake is male or female.

Materials

  1. A blunt probe (metal)

  2. Rubber Gloves (you don't want to spread germs to your snake.)

Procedure

  1. Put on the gloves and pick up your snake.

  2. Find your snakes cloaca (anus)

  3. Gently slide the probe down the cloaca towards the tail

  4. If the probe goes down into the base of the tail, its a male

  5. If the probe doesn't go in very far, its a female.

Probing by a well-trained herpetologist (reptile expert) is the one sure way, but if you're not too close to one that may not be an option. I do not recommend any amateur doing this, as it is very easy to screw it up and seriously injure or even kill your snake!

Both male & female Python Regius have small spurs on either side of their vent (under the tail, you can't miss it). These are the remains of vestigal claws, left over from thousands of years ago when pythons had legs. As a general rule, the Male's spurs are larger than the females. Also, a male snake's tail is slightly longer overall, as well as being thicker at the base, than a females tail. However, with this breed of snake it's difficult to tell because their tail tends to be rather short & stubby compared to other snakes.

Either way, it's much easier to tell if you have one of each sex to compare.

It is usually done by a professional using a method called probing. A probe is used to measure the depth of the markings in the scales, which varies between genders.

Probing is one way this should be done by an expert. This is where a probe isn inserted into the snake how deep it goes determines wether it is male or female.

you should go to a vets or experienced snake handler, as the methods for telling male and female snakes apart should only be done by someone with experience.

It is diffucult. A vet usually will have to tell you. they insert a probe into the snake and from this they can tell what sex it is.
