How can you tell when it is a starter or alternator that is the problem in a 1992 Mitsubishi Diamante what does it sound look or act like?
What is vehicle doing??
With a fully charged battery
Check voltage with a volt meter at battery at rest it should be around 12.75
With engine running volts should be 13.8-14.2 if in this range alternator is working
Check battery cables for looseness and/or corrosion
make sure that the current its getting to the starter solenoid i had a problem when i tried to start my car and the problem was the back part of the ignition switch it had a loose screw i fixed it and now it starts fine
I have a 94 Diamante with SOHC and have changed the starter, it is not a big problem. Just be sure to let the car cool off first because the front exhaust runs just under the starter. Jack the car up, disconnect the battery, let it cool down then to remove the starter (and solenoid)it is just two bolts and two electrical connectors.
Yes First if the starter is bad the car will not start, if it will not start it can not charge the battery. If the starter will not work it can mean there is an electrical problem that will also prevent the alternator from charging the battery The starter itself CAN NOT CAUSE CHARGING PROBLEMS! The extra load on the battery can ruin the battery and that can ruin the alternator. But before that NO.
Most likely, your starter isn't the problem. You may have a bad alternator. Usually when your battery doesn't recharge properly it's an issue with the alternator. Have a mechanic inspect the alternator if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. If it is an issue with the alternator, it's a pretty cheap fix.
How come I replaced the alternator and battery and starter but my 95 eclipse rs still hesitates to start. But it helps when I press the gas?
This vehicle (like most cars) has both a starter and an alternator. The alternator is driven by a serpentine belt, and the starter is located on the lower part of the engine at the transmission, where the teeth engage with the flywheel/flex plate. An alternator for the 1992 Sentra usually costs around $120-150, and a starter in the range of $90-120.
Your car wont start then you charge battery then it starts but after you shut off wont start again also it dies after runnin for a period of time without drivin is it the alternator or maybe starter?
My understanding is that you are hearing the starter "click" but it does not engage. If that is correct your answer is: Typically either 1. the battery isn't fully charged (either a problem with the charging system, something is running the battery down or the alternator isn't charging properly) 2. a poor electrical connection somewhere between the starter and the battery or 3. a problem with the starter or solenoid.
The starter is on the bottom and just about in the middle of the car about two feet back from the front of the car, mounted at the engine/transmission connection. To replace it you will need to disconnect the battery and jack up the front of the car about 8-10 inches. To remove the starter simply remove the positive cable from the screw post on the starter coil, remove the plug in connector located right next to it(pull…

What could be wrong with 1998 Chevy lumina you had a starter alternatnor and a battey put in but the battery keep draining?
What is the problem when 1998 Chevy makes clicking sound but won't turn over then when battery is charged car still cuts off is it the alternator?
It sounds like the starter is bad. The clicking you hear is the solenoid trying to kick-over the starter. If the vehicle starts but, won't stay running, it could be the alternator, or the wireing to (from) the battery or alternator (most likely the ground wire). Or it could be the dreaded MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR!!!!
Starter doesn't need to be replaced unless it went bad. Take the vehicle to Autozone, Oreilly, or any auto part store that offers free battery/starter/alternator testing service, and they can tell you if starter is going bad. I assume you are having problem starting the car. If that's the case, check battery first, then starter and alternator. I have a 2001 Prizm and starter died on me at 40000 miles, which seems awfully early. Replaced…
I had this problem with my 1989 caprice. The voltage was so high it was blowing the headlight bulbs. I changed the alternator but the problem did not go away. Turns out the alternator senses system voltage with a separate wire going from the starter to the alternator. There is an inline connection on this wire about 2 inches from the starter. This connector was corroded on the inside creating a high resistance. I replaced…
