The first indication is usually a slight swelling of the vulva, which may be followed by a slight discharge. Test fo the discharge by wiping the vulva with a white tissue. If it comes away pink, she is in season. Don't count on seeing the discharge without the tissue test because some bitches are very careful about licking to keep themselves clean. A change in personality can also be an indication of a bitch going into heat. Some bitches will become unusually affectionate, but most will become grumpy and distracted, at least during the first week. Though the bloody discharge only appears during the first week, she will remain in season and able to breed for three weeks. * The "heat" period actually lasts approximately 3 weeks. Females may become a bit aggressive prior to this time. They also may begin to mount everything and everyone, this is part of the aggression thing I mentioned. During the first week you will notice their back end may become swollen and pink. It actually looks sore to me, so I put my females in a warm bath and they love it. During the second week there will be a couple of days and a couple of days only, that the female can conceive. What days they are is anybody's guess. They usually begin to slow down the bleeding at the end of the second week, and spot for the next week or so. During the first week she may spot as well. Protect your furniture, rugs and carpets, and bedding. It is blood that leaks and it does stain. If you catch it right after it happens, soak the spot in hydrogen-peroxide. This gets all kinds of blood out of most carpets and materials.

• Blood discharge is usually the biggest indicator, with a pinkish red colored discharge the first week, usually turning to a tannish color during the fertile period, and changing back to a reddish color before gradually stopping altogether. Some females keep themselves extremely clean, and it may be difficult to tell if they are in season at all.
