Typically you have Two Plugs on the side of the transmission (or on the bottom of the Pan)
The one plug that is higher up from the ground is the one you loosen and take out and you can then find something like rolled up paper to stick in there to check where the level is.
It is also important to note that any burnt type smell on the fluid would require changing the fluid.

NOPE, manual transmission you usually shouldn't run low on oil in a stick. If you really would like to check you can follow what it says in the owners manual where it says to check it by taking out the filler bolt and see if the oil is level with the filler hole.....

it should be checked or added with every oil change. You will need gear oil for a manual tranny. you will find the plug somewhere on the tranny.
Its commonly called fluid not oil and if its a manual there isn't a place to check, if its automatic theres a dipstick
