Truly, there isn't much snow in Antarctica. What you see in photos and experience in person is ice. Ninety-eight percent of the continent is covered with an ice sheet. At the South Pole, the ice is almost two miles thick.

Actually, there is not much snow at the North Pole. Much of it is ice and ice water. Annual snowfall works out to less than 50 centimetres but because strong winds stir up the snow, there seem to be continuous snow flurries.
