it may cool down to about 14-15 degrees in a few hours.

Given you have adequate air flow across the evaporator coil located in the air handling unit of your system "Inside" the house your coil should never get below about 38 degrees. A low freon charge or poor air flow across the coil could result in lower temperatures causing the coil to freeze up like a block of ice and you would get almost no air flow at that point. The air coming out of the duct work would typically be about 10 degrees warmer than the coil temperature so a 55 deg discharge indicates a 45 deg coil. These numbers are optimal as contrary to popular belief the primary objective of an air conditioning system is to dehumidify not cool. Cooling is a pleasent by-product and let's face it, 90 degree dry air is still hot so you really do want to cool it down some. Hope this helps and have a Great day!!

Why is smoke coming out of your home air conditioner?

I assume that the smoke you experience hasn't burned your house down yet. The vapor that appears about 12" from the a/c is cold air from the air conditioner meeting the warm air in the room it is cooling, and the cold condenses water vapor out of the hot air, just like a cloud. So it may be steam you're seeing -- not smoke. It should go away after the room cools down a little. If this is not the case, and it really is smoke in your room, then you need to turn off the air conditioner, then unplug it, and call a certified a/c technician. It's possible that someone may have overcharged the freon in that air conditioner.

Is it a problem if the exhaust hose on a home air conditioner unit feels hot?

If you're asking about a portable air conditioner, the kind that has two large hoses running to an adapter that one mounts in a window, the exhaust hose is supposed to be hot, or at least warm. That's heat that the air conditioner has absorbed from the room and is dumping outside the living space.
