Those who believe in the literal truth of the story of Adam and Eve say that they lived such improbably long lives because genetic defects had not yet developed in their DNA, so they had no reason to die young, as we do. This ignores the fact that most deaths, particularly in early times, were the result of injury and disease, for which supposed genetic perfection provides no defence. Nor does it explain why lifespans suddenly fell to normal levels just before historic times and failed to fall any further after that time.
Scientists say that our real ancestors, those they find in the fossil record, actually lived shorter lives than we do now.
