The Apollo lunar rover, also known as the Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV), was a battery-powered four-wheeled rover used during the Apollo missions to the Moon. It allowed astronauts to explore the lunar surface over greater distances than they could on foot. The LRV was used on Apollo 15, 16, and 17 missions.
If it broke down the astronauts would have had to walk back. Since one of the Rovers went over 17 miles, coming and going, this could mean quite a hike, around 8 miles or thereabouts (since the 17 miles was not in a straight line). The Rover had a separate motor for each wheel, so if one or even two conked out they could still have made it back.
The lunar rover, (or LRV, Lunar Roving Vehicle) was brought on the last three missions in order to extend the working area of the crew. Without the LRV, the astronauts could only travel about a mile from the lander (the LM), and they had to carry all their tools and the return samples. With the LRV they could treavel many miles in a much shorter time frame, carry more tools, and return more samples. An added benefit is that it gave NASA a mounting point for a TV camera that could be controlled from Earth, which is why we have so much fantastic video of the last three missions.

All previous Mars probes could only see the part of Mars directly around them. The Rovers, by moving around, were able to see and investigate much, much more. Do not confuse the Mars rover robots with the Apollo Lunar Rovers which were basically a dune buggy for the astronauts to drive around the Moon. This let them also see and investigate much much more. One lunar rover went over 17 miles!
The Lunar Rover had a color TV camera and communication system that permitted the astronauts to transmit pictures and voice communications directly from the vehicle to Earth were carried on board the LRV. Still-picture cameras were mounted on the chest of each astronaut for additional pictures. The TV camera could be controlled remotely from Mission Control Center in Houston.

The joystick was also used on the lunar rover and was placed in the middle of the vehicle so that both astronauts could drive the rover what side of the vehicle they were in.
