1. 19th century and beyond was newspapers and word of mouth.

Early 20th century it was newspapers, magazines, radio, and word of mouth. WWII for America made its debut with radio.

2. Mid 20th century until the end of the 20th century it was newspapers, magazines, radio (car radios by this time), TELEVISION, and word of mouth (gossip). The Vietnam War made its debut with television.

3. 21st century TV & Computers (plus the standard gossip). People might still listen to the car radio but that may have been replaced or largely supplanted by Texting/Cell Phone Usage/Images/Computers/Etc.

Citizens should stay informed because they undoubtedly play the most significant role in the political process of their democracy. As for how to go about staying informed, reading newspapers and newsmagazines would be a great way, along with watching the evening news.
