Paternalism is the restriction of freedom or autonomy justifying it in terms of being for the restricted person or group's own good. It is derived for pater, the Latin for father. In a paternalistic stance one imposes restrictions presenting them as being like an action by a protective parent.

European colonial powers justified their actions in the colonies with the notion of having a civilising mission (civilising uncivilised or less civilised peoples). This implied that the Europeans were superior and knew what was best for the colonised, including restrictions to their freedom and denying the western educated elites access to the colonial bureaucracy. This can be described as paternalistic.
