The enslavement of Abraham's descendants took place around 1250 BC and ended when God sent Moses to "rescue" the slaves. The pharaoh said no and God punished Egypt with ten plagues. After weeping over his dead son the pharaoh let the slaves go but soon changed his mind and sent the Egyptian army after them. At the Red Sea Moses raised his staff and the water moved out of the way and they crossed safely while the army tried to follow but the water then fell back into place drowning the army. The Torah calls this act the Exodus which means departure.

Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers later to become second only to Pharaoh during a major famine. At that time Joseph's 11 brothers, his father Jacob (also known as Israel), and all their children and family relocated to Egypt and settled in the land of Goshen. (Gen 37-46)

After the death of Joseph and his generation, the Israelites grew in great numbers and filled the land. A new Pharaoh came to the Throne in Egypt and feared potential takeover and Israelites joining with Egypt's enemies if war breaks out so he decided to enslave the Israelites. (Exodus 1)
