He didn't. He was killed at the very end of the Civil War.

Lincoln never got to live long enough to see if freeing slaves actually worked. He constantly worried about his decisions and was pressured not to free the slaves. It is said in history that Booth was hired to assassinate Lincoln and he did not do it on his own volition and then some feel Booth didn't kill Lincoln.

However, Lincoln's actions have been etched in the national memory of the United States. So in a way, he has prospered post-mortem from being known as a hero to many and a brave leader.
