The only mention of Lilith in The Bible is a possible mention in Isaiah 34:13-15. The word "liyliyth" appears in a list of eight animals and there might be demonic connotations involved. See the Related Link for additional details.

There are two creation stories in Genesis, now known to have been written by two different authors. The second story (Genesis 2:4b-20) is often thought of as a more detailed account of the creation of man and woman, more briefly described in the first creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), although scholars say that the two stories are quite independent of each other and should be read separately.

Early in the Common Era, Jewish scholars, noting that man (both male and female together) was created in Genesis 1:26, before Eve alone was created in Genesis 2:22. They decided that these were two separate creation events and that Eve was therefore not really the first woman. They developed a midrash that Adam's first wife was Lilith, but that she flew away because Adam would not allow her to be on top when having sex. Afterwards, God created Eve to be Adam's second wife.

Some legends say Lillith or Lili was the first woman on Earth. Others say Eve or Eva was. There is no way to tell for sure. Most people say it was Eve. ^^^ According to the 'legend,' Lilith was Adam's first wife. In some rabbinic literature, Lilith was depicted as the mother of Adam's demonic offspring. Lilith is not mentioned in the Scriptures and, appears to have been invented to explain the inconsistencies between Genesis 1 and Genesis 2.

Why is there is no mention of Adam's first wife Lilith in the Bible?

Lilith is not mentioned because she was not existent. It arose from a mistaken understanding of Genesis 1 and 2. They refer only to one creation event - in Genesis 1 it is an overview, while Genesis 2 focuses on the creation of man. Adam had only one wife, whose name was Eve - same one in both chapters.

Did eve sleep with the devil?

It gets confusing. In the first account of creation (Genesis 1:1 - 2:3) Adam is married to another woman (usually called Lilith) who was created as his equal and, to put it bluntly, dumps him. Eve is created in the second creation story in Genesis 2:4 - 2:24 as a subservient being. Other non-alignments of the stories exist but won't be discussed here. Many modern Christians don't know of this conflict in the stories and assume Lilith was Eve.Jewish scholars in around the 2nd century developed reasons for the second creation indicating that Lilith (not Eve) left Adam and took up with the devil as his wife.If you regard Eve as the first woman, then yes, that's the story. If Eve was the second woman, then no.

Was Adam with another woman that God was displeased with and replaced with Eve?

There is nothing in the Bible to suggest another woman was created before Eve. However, in Jewish folklore, there was the tale of Lilith being Adam's first wife, who was created contemporaneously with Adam, as opposed to Eve, who was created from one of Adam's ribs. Rabbi Isaac ben Jacob ha-Cohen argued that Lilith left Adam after she refused to become subservient to him and left room for Eve, who would accept being second to Adam. Lilith is usually viewed a demon or demonic-like personage in Jewish folklore. Most Jews do not discuss Lilith and she is largely absent from Christian retellings of the Genesis.

Why is the Lilith fair called the Lilth fair?

The Lilith Fair was so-named by Sarah McLauchlan for its first tour in 1997. She started the tour because she'd gotten fed up with concert/radio promoters that wouldn't feature two female musicians in a row. She was through with their sexism, and in her own way was promoting the feminist revolution! So it fits that she chose the name "Lilith," which is the name of a woman from a medieval Jewish legend. Lilith is apparently Adam's first wife, but she was made from only earth (just like Adam). Instead of thinking of herself as part of Adam, she thought she was his equal. Well HAHA. That didn't work out so well. She got banished, and the legend goes on the same way as our well-learned Genesis story always goes-- God created Eve from one of Adam's ribs, and she acted as part of Adam, the other half that made him whole. Awww. Anyway, to make a short story long, the Lilith Fair was named after Lilith, a female that symbolizes Feminist Power.
