How did Adam have a wife called Lilith if he and Eve were supposed to be the first man and woman?

∙ 9y agoThere are two creation stories in Genesis, now known to have been written by two different authors. The second story (Genesis 2:4b-20) is often thought of as a more detailed account of the creation of man and woman, more briefly described in the first creation story (Genesis 1:1-2:4a), although scholars say that the two stories are quite independent of each other and should be read separately.
Early in the Common Era, Jewish scholars, noting that man (both male and female together) was created in Genesis 1:26, before Eve alone was created in Genesis 2:22. They decided that these were two separate creation events and that Eve was therefore not really the first woman. They developed a midrash that Adam's first wife was Lilith, but that she flew away because Adam would not allow her to be on top when having sex. Afterwards, God created Eve to be Adam's second wife.

The Lilith Fair was so-named by Sarah McLauchlan for its first tour in 1997. She started the tour because she'd gotten fed up with concert/radio promoters that wouldn't feature two female musicians in a row. She was through with their sexism, and in her own way was promoting the feminist revolution! So it fits that she chose the name "Lilith," which is the name of a woman from a medieval Jewish legend. Lilith is apparently Adam's first wife, but she was made from only earth (just like Adam). Instead of thinking of herself as part of Adam, she thought she was his equal. Well HAHA. That didn't work out so well. She got banished, and the legend goes on the same way as our well-learned Genesis story always goes-- God created Eve from one of Adam's ribs, and she acted as part of Adam, the other half that made him whole. Awww. Anyway, to make a short story long, the Lilith Fair was named after Lilith, a female that symbolizes Feminist Power.
