Religion played a very significant role in the life of the slaves; they expressed their religious beliefs mostly in songs since they didn't have many other options. Most of the slaves believed in many different gods but were forced by their masters to practise Christianity. Practising a form of religion allows them to hope for something better in the next life, and advising them to endure the bitterness and hardships of this life.
In most cases, slaves were forced to follow the religion of their master. However, in the early days of Christianity, pagan slaves belonging to Christian masters had to get their masters' permission to become Christians. The reason for this is that Christian masters were required to allow their Christian slaves free time on Sundays, thus lowering the economic value of the slave.

Many religious people used passages from the Christian Bible to justify the enslavement of Black Africans, because of their lack of understanding of a curse put upon the son of Ham, by his father Noah who was drunk at the time he placed a curse on Ham and his son. The curse in this Biblical story does not say that it was a curse on Ham's descendants for all time and since the story of Noah, the flood, the saving of all the animals in the world on this boat are clearly fictional, the justification of the enslavement of Black Africans is questionable as well. Christianity and the Bible have been used to justify many of the racist beliefs held by people like the KKK as well.
