The Spanish colonies had inadequate support and in most cases inferior weapons. The naval battle in Manila Bay was one-sided in favor of the powerful US fleet, and the battles off Cuba were equally disastrous. On land, the US (being much closer than Spain) was able to field infantry and cavalry units that overpowered the Spanish and their Cuban conscripts.
The US also had the support (initially) of the local people who disliked Spanish rule. In the Philippines, however, the nationalists came to resent the change to US occupation just as much.
