His message was to warn the nation of Israel, who had gotten arrogant and hardened toward the poor and oppressed that He was going to judge them by having their enemies conquer them. Israel's relationship with God was unique but not exclusive.

He wrote his "vision" down... and it is preserved in The Bible today for anyone to read.

"...He received this message IN VISIONS two years before the earthquake... This is his report of what he saw and heard..." (Amos 1:1-2 NLT New Living Translation).

Amos still communicates God's message to anyone [nation or individual] willing to read and heed it:

"How you hate honest judges! How you despise people who tell the Truth!" (Amos 5:10 NLT)

"Can horses gallop over rocks? Can oxen be used to plow rocks? Stupid even to ask - but that's how stupid you are when you turn Justice into poison and make bitter the sweet fruit of Righteousness." (Amos 6:12 NLT)

"Listen to this, you who rob the poor and trample the needy! You can't wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to cheating the helpless. You measure out your grain in false measures and weigh it out on dishonest scales... I will never forget the wicked things you have done!" (Amos 8:4-7 NLT)

"I, the Sovereign LORD, AM watching this sinful nation of Israel, and I will uproot it and scatter its people across the earth. Yet I have promised that I will never completely destroy the family of Israel, says the LORD. But all sinners will die by the sword [in war] - all those who say, 'Nothing bad will happen to us.'

"In that Day I will restore the fallen kingdom of David ["...you are to name Him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the LORD God will give Him THE THRONE OF HIS ANCESTOR DAVID. And He will reign over Israel forever; His Kingdom will never end!" - Luke 1:31-33 NLT]. It is now like a house in ruins, but I will rebuild its walls and restore its former glory... I will bring My exiled people of Israel back from distant lands, and they will rebuild their ruined cities and live in them again... 'I will firmly plant them there in the land I have given them, ' says the LORD your God. 'Then they will never be uprooted again.'" (Amos 9:8-15 NLT)

Amos' "recorded visions" still communicate God's warnings to repent to His scattered people [and whoever has the Faithful eyes to see and the ears to hear]. And his prophecies of Jesus Christ, the King and Heir to the throne of David, and the coming restoration of the Kingdom of God to the earth, is still being communicated to the hearts and minds of those who believe the Words.

Why amos is called a prophet of doom?

In commencement, doom is defined as judgement.Given this definetion and in line with the topic under discussion it cannot be dismissed as far fetched to suppose that Amos was a prophet of doom. It can be argued that doom is at the core of Amos' message and this doom came as a result of various sins which were commited by the lsraelite nation. These sins include rampant corruption in the courts, social injustice as well as idolatry. It must be pointed out that these sins breeched the covenant between yahweh and the israelite. As a result this has led many scholars to argue that Amos indeed was a prophet of doom. While acknowledging that Amos was a prophet of doom it will be a misnormer of judgement to conclude along those lines. A closer glance at Amos book can lead one to point out that Amos was a prophet of hope.

Who is the father of Amos?

There are two people named Amos in the Bible. First, the prophet Amos, who was born in Tekoa(ten miles south of Jerusalem). The Bible tells us that he was a sheep raiser and 'nipper of figs', and that he was NOT the 'son of a prophet', but that's all it says of his early life.(Amos 7:14)(Amos 1:1) His father is not mentioned. The other Amos is one of Jesus' ancestors (Luke 3:25). His father was Mattathias, but there is no further information on him.
