Jackson gained national attention as a war hero by his overwhelming victory in the Battle of New Orleans. The US did not have many victories in the war of 1812 and so was looking for a hero . Jackson capitalized on his success by visiting Washington soon afterward and meeting the important people there.

After he lost to Adams in 1824 he became a US Senator and more of an insider and developed a political party organization. He instigated support from newspaper editors who essentially ran a Jackson campaign for the next four years

by attacking the current Adams administration as well as supporting Jackson.

Besides being a war hero. Andrew Jackson led the movement of the "common man" and derived much support from Westerners and those pushing for westward expansion. He also gained support from Southerners as a slaveholder and a sympathizer to slavery supporters.

Johnson was elected as the vice-president as the running mate of Lincoln. He became President when Lincoln was killed. Lincoln chose him as his running mate because he was from Tennessee and was the only Southern Senator that had remained loyal to the union when his state seceded.
