The Flanders Mare! From her pictures I would have thought he was being unkind and unjust! This was reported first by Bishop Burnet, a Scot who was a 17the Cent historian who was quite unpleasant.
The marriage was annulled on July 9, 1540.
When Henry saw Anne of Cleaves, Henry gasped and ran away.
The marriage was annulled July 1540 on the grounds of non-consummation
Answer Anne of Cleves, King Henry VIII's fourth wife, had no children.
From his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, he wanted a divorce because she wouldn't produce a male heir (Biologically speaking, that was probably his fault, but hindsight is 20/20 vision). From his fourth wife, Anne of Cleaves, he wanted a divorce for two main reasons. The first was that Anne was unattractive to him, and he had found another love interest in Kathryn Howard (who would become his fifth wife after the marriage between Anne of Cleaves and King Henry was annulled). There was also political tension between the Duke of Cleaves and the English government which was the "straw that broke the camel's back" and pushed King Henry to seek an annulment.
Henry VIII (1491 - 1547) was eventually persuaded to marry again, a few years after the death of his third wife, Jane Seymour (c1504 - 1537), but this fourth wife, Anne of Cleves (1515 - 1557) was chosen via a portrait Henry had commissioned from Hans Holbein. When he saw her in the flesh, on New Year's Day 1540, he was extremely unhappy with her appearance (apparently he called her "the Flanders Mare"). Although he went ahead and married Anne on 6 January 1540, Henry refused to consummate the marriage, so eventually this was annulled on 9 July 1540. But at least Anne of Cleves was "paid off" and did not lose her head. She received a generous divorce settlement and remained on good terms with the king. Anne died in 1557, with declining health.
The king of England in 1540 was Henry VIII, and the Consort Queen was Anne of Cleves from 6th January until 9th July when her marriage to Henry was annulled. He then married Catherine Howard on 28th July 1540.

Answer Anne of Cleves was the fourth of the six wives of King Henry VIII of England. She was born in Dusseldorf, in what is now Germany on 22nd September 1515, Daughter of Duke John III of Cleves. The marriage to Henry VIII was an arranged marriage - Henry wished to produce more male children to ensure the succession of the monarchy after his death and his advisers wished to strengthen England's alliance with Germany. In 1538 the court painter, Hans Holbein was sent to Cleves to make a portrait of her and after seeing the portrait Henry agreed to the marriage but found her unattractive when they actually met. The marriage to Henry took place on 6th January 1540 and was annulled on 9th July 1540 on the grounds that she had already contracted to marry another European nobleman. Anne did not remarry, and remained in England until her death on 18th July 1557. Anne of Cleaves was born 22 September 1515-16 July 1557. She was a German noblewoman and the fourth wife of Henry VIII of England and as such she was Queen of England from 6 January 1540 to 9 July 1540. The marriage was never consummated, and she was not crowned queen consort. Following the annulment of their marriage, Anne was given a generous settlement by the King, and thereafter referred to as the King's Beloved Sister. She was King Henry's fourth wife.
It is often said that Henry VIII referred to her as the 'Flanders Mare' but if he did he would only have said this in private. Prior to her marriage with Henry she was referred to as 'the Lady of Cleves' and during her brief marriage she was called 'Queen Anne' by virtue of her being the King's wife (she was not crowned). After the divorce and due to the amiable relationship that formed between Henry and Anne she was referred to as the king's 'sister'.
Anne of Cleeves was King Henry VII's fourth wife. The marriage was annulled because they never slept together, so she never had any children with him.
