He reduces the number of slaves and opens citizenship to people livingin the provinces. Finally, he creates a new calendar named the Julian calendar. This very calendar, with a few minor adjustments, is the same one used around the world today.

∙ 9y agoCaesar Augustus (or, Octavian) became Emperor of Rome in 31 B.C.E. as a result of his victory over the final challenger to the throne, Marc Antony, at the Battle of Actium. With all challengers now put down, Augustus reigned as the supreme leader of the Roman Empire, gradually but indomitably gathering up all ruling power into his hands alone, while also maintaining the appearance of republican government.

He gained control of the army and has amassed a great wealth with the spoils of war, which he used for patronage. He did away with the Republican institutions and created his own absolute personal rule

∙ 13y agoAugustus used his power wisely. First of all, he obtained the power, not by becoming "dictator" but by only accepting the offices that gave him unlimited control. He knew that a one man rule was inevitable, but his motto was "make haste slowly". In other words, the empire had to have time to adjust to the changes. He tried to rebuild the Roman population which had been devastated by the civil wars, by enacting family laws that rewarded people with children. He just about rebuilt the city's public buildings and temples, plus adding new ones. He improved the water supply and divided the city into wards for firefighting and policing.
