Apparently, it was caused by swells of magma called mantle plumes.

Originally, most of the continents were joined and as the mantle plumes began to swell, they caused cracks in the surface, which eventually caused the break away from the Antarctic.

It's still happening in Ethiopia and it's predicted that eventually, some of the East coast of Africa will break away.
