Australia became a rich and wealthy nation under John Howard. He was Australia's second-longest-serving PM and, during that time, he built Australia up into a rich economy, settling it up to handle the worldwide recession most adequately. He has not really been acknowledged for his incredible foresight, and the way he put aside reserves from the budget to build up Australia's colony. The Rudd/Gillard government was the government which followed, and actually experienced the recession, and this Labor government managed to spend every last cent of the surplus.

John Howard was not appreciated for his firm policies against illegal Immigration, but his policies and actions certainly reduced the number of illegal asylum seekers.
