There were many factors that contributed to the Australian identify: federation was just one of them. For the first time, Australia was a nation in its own right. It was no longer just a colonial outpost of England. People living on the Australian continent now had an actual name - "Australians" - and were no longer just people from six different colonies on the same continent. They had a country, a government and a coat of arms to call their own; and they had a flag to call their own, a symbol which united them all as Australians.
