Was the Schlieffen Plan working in 1917?

The Schlieffen Plan was the German stratgey at the beginning of World War I. It called for an invasion of France first and to wipe them out quickly before Russia could mobilize, avoiding a two-front war. However, France held out and Russia was faster than expected. Thus, the Schlieffen Plan failed miserably. It was not working in 1917, even though Russia withdrew from the war because it did not give Germany a short war or a single front war. And besides, France was suppposed to be defeated first.

Why where they fighting in World War I?

it was all because of alliances, if there wasn't any peace treaty's between any of the countries in ww1 none of it would of happened, it would of been a war between Serbia and Austria-Hungary, but when Austria-Hungary attack Serbia Russia had to jump in to help Serbia and when Russia attacked Austria-Hungary Germany had to jump in to help Austria-Hungary, and then when Germany went to attack France through Belgium, BEF (Britain) had to jump in to help Belgium and France, and later during the war America and Italy joined in. Sounds a bit confusing but I'm sure its right :)

How did the major powers in World War 1 become involved?

On the 28th of June 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand –heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne– was assassinated in Bosnia. Austria pointed the finger at Serbia, and therefore declared war on them. They then started bombing Belgrade. Next Russia’s army prepared to help defend Serbia against the attack. Germany –Austria’s ally– then sent a letter, demanding Russia that they pull out and abandon helping Serbia; in defending their country. Russia refused and so forth, Germany declared war on Russia. They also begin to move their army towards France (Russia’s ally.) France then began to prepare to fight a German invasion, and to top things off Austria declared war on Russia. Meanwhile. the Germans were still in Belgium, when Britain declared war on them, Germany then declared war on France and invaded Belgium (even though they were not part of the triple entente!) Finally Britain then ordered Germany to withdraw from Belgium.

Why did Germany invade Belgium in World War 1 what happen in the response to this?

The Germans invaded Belgium because they thought it would go faster. At that time no-one could imagine a Belgian defending his home. Then as a result Belgium called the other two guarantee-powers to help, France and the UK. These two nations did not immediately help Belgium. France could not resist the glamor of regaining Alsace-Lorraine and the UK poured it's troops in France, instead of Belgium and kept them there until the Belgian army was at breaking point and had retreated in Namur and Antwerp.
