Britain gained control by winning the Seven Years's War under William Pitt's control. Instead of attacking small troops, he focused on the Quebec-Montreal area. Their first victory was Louisborg, where he sent a small amount of troops. Then, at 1759, his troop was able to conquer Quebec. Soon after, Montreal started falling apart. France signed the peace settlement and was thrown off North America.

This is difficult to answer because we don't know to which war you are referring. For example, as a result of the French and Indian War, France gave Britain all its territories in mainland North America. At the end of World War 1, Britain gained territory in Africa.
One result of the French and Indian War was that France lost all of its possession in North America. England gained control of Quebec and Spain gained control of Louisiana.

Great Britain and France in North America

For Britain the main result of the French and Indian War was the complete expulsion of the French from North America. This brought an end to the century and a half of the three way colonial struggle for dominance in North America between France, Spain and Britain, leaving only Spain and Britain in North America. Britain got possession of the former French Colony of New France, or Lower Canada, which is today's Canadian Province of Quebec.
In Europe - the Seven Years war, fought between British led allies and French led allies. In North America - the French and Indian war, which was fought between Great Britain, her North American colonies, native American allies and France, with its colonies and allies. The British won the war in North America, which ended with the Treaty of Paris (1763). This is considered the birth of Britain's Imperial Empire, as London was granted full control of North America, French India and most of the Caribbean.
