After Jesus' resurrection and ascension, his apostles went throughout the Roman world preaching the gospel and planting churches, however they were met with persecution. Eventually, as Rome spread out and began to lose control of the empire, rival militaristic Roman leaders began to battle one another.

One such leader was Constantine. Before an important battle with the odds against him, he claimed to have a vision of Christian imagery promising victory. Under the banner of Christianity his troops fought and won the battle, eventually taking control of the Roman Empire and legalizing Christianity.

There have been doubts concerning the legitimacy of Constantine's conversion, but nevertheless his policies had a major effect in bring "Christendom" to the Roman Empire.
