I was a child, but I recall it as a time when most people were proud of our strong and restrained leadership. Kennedy had the wisdom and courage to say "You shall not pass", and he saw to it. Remember that this was the height of the Cold War, and we feared that the war might be quickly getting "hot". But Kennedy stood firm, and the USSR relented.

JFK had not told the people of America about the Cuban Missile Crisis because it didn't want to worry the people. What JFK did was the best thing for the people and it was the right thing.

In 1949, the Western Allies formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for defense against the communist presence in Europe. In the same year, the USSR exploded its first atomic bomb. With both superpowers holding nuclear weapons, fear and mistrust between the two sides increased.

The Soviets constructed a wall across Berlin in 1961, separating East from West in the city. In 1962, the Cuban crisis erupted when the USA discovered that the USSR was building missile sites on the island of Cuba in the Caribbean. These sites were within range to launch an attack by nuclear weapons on American cities. The two superpowers came to the brink of war before the USSR agreed to withdraw the weapons.

Although the two superpowers never became involved in direct warfare, both sides became involved in wars elsewhere in the world. The USA fought communism and the USSR helped communist fighters.
