The king liked Daniel. The other Babylonian royal ministers didn't like that, so they decided to get rid of him by pressing the king into throwing him into the lions' den thereby (they thought) killing him.

The story in Daniel chapter 6 says that Daniel was thrust into the role of second-in command of the entire Persian empire, and that jealous men conspired to have Daniel thrown into the den of lions, taking advantage of the well-known Persian code of morality in which a promise can not be broken. They had King Darius issue an edict that prevented anyone from any form of prayer, an edict which Daniel immediately broke. It follows with a pious passage that can only be Propaganda. Not only was Daniel a role model for the readers, by praying to his God in spite of the risk, his God was able to save him from the lions, just as God had previously saved his young friends from the furnace in a quite similar narrative a little earlier in the book.

In the Book of Daniel, Daniel not only survived, but prospered. His rise to become second in command of the entire Babylonian Empire shows close parallels to the earlier tale of Joseph rising to become the second in command of the Egyptian Empire, the use of dreams to demonstrate his uncanny power of prophecy. After Babylon was conquered by the Persians, Daniel rose almost immediately to become second in command of the new empire. According to this book, Daniel had no trouble surviving.

Many scholars regard the Book of Daniel as a second-century-BCE Jewish novel in which Daniel was the chief character. It was never in doubt that he would survive many dramatic adventures and go on to live a life that would engender pride in contemporary Jews.

How long did Daniel in the Old Testament work?

A:The history in the Book of Daniel is a little confused, but it says that he was taken as a child from Jerusalem at the beginning of the Babylonian Exile, then continued to learn and then later work in Babylonian under both the Babylonian and Persian rulers. This is a period of well over 50 years. The Book of Daniel is regarded by Old Testament scholars as a second-century-BCE novel, so although Daniel worked for at least 50 years in the book, there is no suggestion that there was ever a real Daniel who interpreted dreams and rose to high office in two opposing empires.
