The role of King Solomon in history has come under increasing scrutiny, as historians and archaeologists continue to find evidence contrary to the biblical account.

Stables at the far northern city of Meggido were long identified with Solomon, supporting the biblical account of the reach of his great army. Henry O Thompson reports in Biblical Archaeology that these stables were later dated by Yadin to King Ahab, c. 750 BCE.

According to 1 Kings 10:28f [esp 1 Kings 10:26] Solomon had a chariot army. Thompson again notes that there is no record of his chariots ever fighting a battle, something that calls into doubt the existence of this chariot army.

The story of Solomon's liaison with the Queen of Sheba certainly shows off his status and great wealth, but scholars now say that this account was inserted into the story of Solomon some time after the Babylonian Exile.

The present consensus of scholars is that, while there is no reason to doubt the historicity of Solomon, Judah was at that time only a small, essentially tribal region.

Solomon's empire is a Hebrew folklore story with little firm basis - where are the remains of his many palaces which housed his thousand wives and concubines?
