The "death and resurrection" is made believable by saying it never happened. It is the rest of the story where there arise many difficulties. The fight with Professor James Moriarty is believable for Holmes regularly mentions his prowess in fighting. This part of the explanation to Watson in 'The Adventure of the Empty House' is very suspect:

"I travelled for two years in Tibet (China), therefore, and amused myself by visiting Lhassa (China) and spending some days with the head Llama. . . . I then passed through Persia (Iran), looked in at Mecca (Saudi Arabia), and paid a short but interesting visit to the Khalifa at Khartoum (Sudan), the results of which I have communicated to the Foreign Office."

China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Sudan were as hostile to westerners as they are today. Notice I have not even mentioned the ways Holmes would have had to take to get to these locations. Then we come to the fact "that Mycroft had preserved my rooms and my papers exactly as they had always been." Why did this not raise questions from Watson or Mrs. Hudson?
