Edward VI of England was the only son of King Henry VIII's to survive infancy. As a child, he was fairly sickly and Henry covetted him above all else. He had two older sisters, Elizabeth Tudor and Mary Tudor. Mary was the product of his father's first marriage to Catherine of Aragon (who was originally intended to marry his older brother). Elizabeth was the product of Henry's second marriage to Anne Boleyn (his divorce to Catherine caused England to separate from the Catholic Church and create the Anglican Church). Despite the fact that he was the youngest, Edward inherited the throne just because he was male, and at the time the rights to the throne were always forfieted to the Duke of York, regardless of his birth order. Because Mary and Elizabeth were both women, neither of them began to reign until after Edward's death.

Lady Jane Grey was not the rightful heir to the throne. She was named as heir by Edward VI because his oldest sister, Mary Tudor, was a Catholic, and he was a protestant, as was Jane. Lady Jane was never crowned Queen because Mary was the rightful heir, and she was determined to be Queen, so stopped the plan.
