When General US Grant was serving as a junior officer in the Mexican War, his experiences there caused a problem for him in the US Civil War. In the Mexican War, frontal assaults were successful. When the US Civil War was underway, Grant recalled how effective frontal assaults were in the Mexican War.
In the US Civil War, military changes caused Grant to use the tactics he learned during the Mexican War. The advent of the mini ball changed the value of the frontal assault. It increased the range of riflemen in such a way that entrenched mini ball rifles reduced the numbers of troops that were shot long before they could reach the defenders.
Grant also saw in the Mexican War that the Mexican armies never displayed the tenacity in battle as did the Confederates. He therefore underestimated the will to win that the Confederacy displayed despite the overwhelming odds against them.
