They met in the late summer of 1775. Washington had been put in command of the Americans besieging the British in Boston by Congress in June, with his headquarters in Cambridge. Arnold had an audacious scheme for seizing Quebec which he promoted to Washington, the hope being that Canada, or at least Quebec, might join the American colonies in Revolution. Quebec had only been under British rule for twelve years, after its start and long history as a French colony and most of the inhabitants were French. They were also Catholic, and the Americans were proudly and loudly Protestant, which assured that this scheme was unlikely to get far. Unfortunately Arnold's plan was based on a faulty map, which understated the distance he would have to lead his column through the Maine woods, and food ran out weeks before Quebec came in sight. The scheme failed, the American general commanding the column cooperating with Arnold was killed, and Arnold was badly wounded, shot in the leg and the leg was broken. Arnold would break the same leg again at Saratoga when his horse fell on him, and after that his leg was very painful and much shorter than the other one. This left hum crippled and unable to take a command in the field with the army, providing the excuse for his appointment as commander at West Point. Arnold's bitterness over Horatio Gates stealing all the glory due to Arnold for Saratoga helped decide Arnold to betray West Point to the British.
