George Washington was born in Westmoreland, Virginia Colony, British America. His mother and father were also born in Virginia. Virginia was under British control at the time which made the Washingtons British subjects. When Virginia became part of the United States, all of its natural born subjects became natural born citizens of the United States as well, and the treaty of peace with Britain absolved them of any claims to allegiance by Britain.
George Washington's military career began when he joined the Virginia colonial militia in 1752. He distinguished himself during the French and Indian War and later became the commander of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Washington's experience, leadership abilities, and reputation within the military and political circles led to his appointment as the commander-in-chief of the newly formed United States Army.
