In the late 1800s, Germany increased its power primarily through the unification of the various duchies, principalities, and other territories which comprised the Germanic regions of Central Europe. Especially through the efforts of Otto Von Bismarck, what had once been disorganized and often competing entities were unified into the modern nation of Germany -- now governed by a single power and fueled by the ambition to outdo other European nations in the bid for dominance in the global community.
