Greek philosophy marked the beginning of organized Western thought. From this logic developed along with mathematics, the sciences (from Biology to physics and cosmology), political theory, later on psychology, and much more. Early theories of evolution and atomic theory began in Ancient Greece. Socrates is credited with being one of the founders of Western philosophy. The influence of Ancient Greece to philosophy is so great that the English philosopher Alfred Whitehead states, with some exaggeration, "Western philosophy is just a series of footnotes to Plato." Whether Plato's philosophy was anywhere near as important as Whitehead claims is debatable. Regardless of that, Ancient Greece marked the starting point for Western thought. Figures such as Aquinas, Hobbes, Descartes, Mill, Nietzsche, Kant, and Rousseau may be known today if it weren't for Plato and Aristotle. Also, physics, mathematics, biology, and all other fields that developed out of Greece may still be in their primitive forms. Greece had a profound influence on today's culture!

How are hellenic and Hellenistic cultures different and alike?

They were alike in that they were all heavily influenced by hundreds of years of Greek culture, art and philosophy. But Hellenic (that is, Greek) culure and Hellenistic cultures were different in that Hellenic culture kept its true, traditional forms while Hellenistic cultures in other countries were only an influence on local culture, art and philosophy but did not replace it. Each and every "Hellenistic" country was different from another by also staying faithful to much of its own traditions in philosophy and art.
