Guion Bluford was a Reserve Officer of the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Vietnam War as an officer of the United States Air Force. Later, he obtained a Masters and PhD in Aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. In 1983, he became the first African American to travel to space.
