He has become famous for two expeditions, which both failed: first he sailed on an expedition financed by a group of English mechants to find a westward passage to China by going north of Canada, but instead ended up exploring parts of the US east coast. The second, most famous expedition was financed by the Dutch East India Company, aimed at finding a passage eastward to the East Indies by a route north of Russia and Siberia.

Hudson found this passage blocked by icefields and then tried (again) to find a westward passage north of Canada instead. He found that blocked by icefields, too. Trying to find another route west he sailed into what is now called the Hudson bay. By this time his crew wanted to return but Hudson wanted to press on: Indians had told him the ocean started right behind the bay (later it transpired that they thought the Great Lakes were an ocean). The crew mutinied and set Hudson adrift in a boat. Nothing was seen or heard of him again.
