Henry VIII removed the Churches in England from Papal oversight, with the result that every Bishop (save one) resigned. Henry stole all the land that belonged to the Church, giving monasteries and convents to newly created peers, and using the loot stolen from the Church to finance his government. He then formed an entirely new Church on protestant lines, howbeit with a service that kind of looked like the Catholic Mass, although it was in English.

Henry VIII who was a Roman Catholic wanted to divorce his wife but the pope refused stating it was agains the church. Henry VIII broke from the Catholic Church creating the Protestant religion and made himself the head of it. Other Anglican religions are off shoots of this Protestantism because they did not want to defer to the King as the head of the church.
