Henry VII, aka Henry Tudor, died on April 22, 1509 at age 52 from lung disease (possibly tuberculosis) at Richmond Palace, Surrey. His son, Henry VIII, succeeded him peacefully, with no immediate rival to challenge the crown.
Henry VII, became King by defeating King Richard III, in the battle of Bosworth 1485. He had a very weak claim to the throne from his mother's side, but as Richard had no heirs and Henry had defeated him in battle he was able to usurp the throne. Henry was a Lancastrian and Richard was of York. Henry's mother made a promise with Elizabeth Woodville that when Henry becomes king he'd marry Elizabeth of York (Edward IV's daughter) therefore, uniting the two households of York and Lancaster. Richard was rumoured to have killed his nephews that dissapeared (the Princes in the Tower) and this made him look like a power-hungry, cruel, usurper, therefore increasing Henry's chances of becoming King. Support from France and from the south of England also helped him defeat Richard at the battle of Bosworth.
Henry VII, previously Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond, gained the throne by conquest. He was a member of the house of Lancaster, who had been fighting the Wars of the Roses with the house of York for 30 years. Henry eventually fought the battle of Bosworth Field where the previous king, Richard III, of the house of York, was killed. Henry ended the conflict by marrying Elizabeth of York, daughter of Edward IV and niece of Richard III.
