In the early Thirties most Germans fell in love over Hitler. It became a fatal attraction as he led them to war and millions died for him in vain. They felt betrayed by him when he killed himself and the Nazi Leaders surrendered unconditionally.

There is a show called "The Fatal Attraction of Adolf Hitler" that explains exactly how they felt. The Germans themselves tell people how they felt and why they felt that way. The Military Channel and History Channel show that TV show sometimes and I think PBS does too and Discovery Channel. It is worth watching.

The small minority hated him and knew he was just a gangster type that was cruel and brutal. They knew he hated the Jews and was murdering them. People would not listen to their warnings. When they saw the concentration camps and emaciated Jews they understood what the minority of Germans had been telling them. They had thought it was just rumors and denied knowledge of the Jews being killed. It was a lie. The military forces could smell the concentration camps a mile away so they knew the towns people could smell it. In the Seventies, a leading German said that any German who said they knew nothing about the concentration camps was lying. He said they all knew but they hated the Jews. Racism was rampant. It took the German people decades to get over their shame and embarrassment at being fooled by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis and for the atrocities.
