Islam reached West Africa through two means.

First, by the Muslim forces attacking the Roman Empire and the West African countries during the reign of the Second Rightful Caliph Hazrat Omar (RAU) and the third Rightful Caliph Hazrat Osman (RAU). The onslaught went on during Ummayed Caliphate.

Second, by the Muslim traders who influenced the local population with their strong character, honesty and truthfulness.
