How did Israel get its independence?

With the British scheduled to end their "mandate" of controlling a large land area

in the Middle East, the UN voted in 1947 to divide one small part of it, allowing the

surrounding Arab nations to administer and control one segment, and the "Zionists"

to administer and control the other segment. The surrounding Arab nations objected,

and did not accept this "partition". When the British mandate ended, on May 14, 1948,

the "Zionists" immediately declared their segment to be an independent sovereign nation,

and the surrounding Arab nations immediately combined their armies and attacked the

new independent sovereign nation.

In 1948, when the British announced the end of the Mandate for Palestine, the Jewish Settlement used the opportunity and the legal avenue opened by Resolution 181 to declare the State of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state. The day after, seven Arab armies from neighboring countries joined with the Arab Militias already operating. As the fighting progressed, Israel was able to repel the invaders and claim about 78% of British Mandate of Palestine as the grounds of their new state. The War is considered by most to be an Israeli Victory and set the internationally recognized borders of the country.
